Historical records show that the base population for the Lipizzan horse were Karst horses. In the register the horses were named »the horse of Karst breed from the Lipizzan breeding''. Also Valvasor in 1689 describes and praises the Karst horses as hard and quick horses. The Lipizzan breed first appeared in the horse centre in Lipica, which was started in the year 1580 by the Austrian archduke Karel. For improving the Karst horse Spanish, Neapolitan and later the Kladrub and Arabic horses were used. So one of the oldest horse breed was formed, the Lipizzan horse.
