There are different theories regarding the origin of the breed. Most probably the breed has been developed from birds that came into the region around 1910 with the Lebanese and Syrian settlers. Around that time these chicken were brought in from Sierra Leone and replaced the ones on the border plains. The name of the first breeder was Alpha Kabélé. He developed the name of the population: Soussou. Indiscriminate crossing took place with local and imported populations. A certain subpopulation is called after a veterinarian called Nyombi Tokhé who developed the breed further: in the 1960's the breed became very popular around Benna.
