A region of the brain consisting of a collection of neurons located in the forebrain ventral to the caudate and putamen. (caudoputamen in rodent) and continuous with these structures. There is no distinct boundary between the nucleus accumbens and the caudate/putamen, but in rodents, it can be identified by its lack of traversing fiber bundles in comparison to the dorsal striatum. Its principle neuron is the medium spiny neuron. Together with the neostriatum (caudate nucleus and putamen), the nucleus accumbens forms the striatum. [ BIRNLEX:727 ]

a collection of pleomorphic cells in the caudal part of the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle, in the region of the olfactory tubercle, lying between the head of the caudate nucleus and the anterior perforated substance. It is part of the ventral striatum, a composite structure considered part of the basal ganglia[GO][GO:0021768].
The ventral striatopallidal complex in birds corresponds closely to its counterpart in mammals, with a nucleus accumbes present in the rostral telenceaphalon. Note that in birds, a region previously called the nucleus accumbens is now recognized as the lateral part of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis.[ISBN:0471888893]
